your cat?
Need to rehome
We know that sometimes life happens and people find themselves unable to properly care for their cat. We are happy to offer you Rehome by Adopt A Pet. This tool is an online service for families (private owners) that need to find another loving home for their pets.
You can use the referral coupon code, RCXHAQTL2U8AD8Z, to reduce the listing fee to $1!
Our greatest fear is that someone will feel so desperate that they don’t consider who may be adopting their loving pet. If you aren't 100% confident in your ability to choose the right adopter, Rehome offers question-by-question screening guidance right on the application page, so you can see which answers are great, which are not-so-great, and which ones might require follow-up questions. We want to ensure your loved one gets the home they deserve.
Give Rehome by Adopt A Pet a try. If you need further help, you can contact Stray Cat Blues, we may be able to help you find solutions that will allow you to keep your cat as a member of the family. While we can't guarantee miracles, we do have extensive experience dealing with a multitude of issues and can certainly offer suggestions and alternatives to giving up your cat.
Getting Started
1. Prepare Your Cat for Adoption
When you give up a pet, make sure sure your pet is microchipped and spayed or neutered. This increases the chances of your pet finding a new home. Spaying/neutering your pet helps prevent unwanted behaviors, like humping or marking, in their new home.
2. Take a Photo and Write a Bio
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and the same holds true for pets. When marketing your pet, you’ll want to use a picture that will capture adopters’ attention - we’ve found videos work the best!
The best pictures have good lighting and are free from distractions in the background.
With cats, a simple photo of just their face will do - try to capture their personality and charm.
Next, write a bio highlighting their best characteristics and personality, be sure to include their age. Need help writing a bio, consider using ChatGPT. Additional bio writing tips.
Do they like treats or play with toys?
If you know how your pet interacts with other pets or children, this is perfect information to include.
If your pet has concerning behavior or special medical needs, save that information for a conversation with adopters instead of including it directly in the bio.
3. Create an Online Profile
It’s easy to use and will get your pet’s profile in front of thousands of potential adopters. Adopters who are searching for pets on adoptapet.com will see your pet’s profile in their search results!
Use the photo you took and bio you wrote in Step 2 when setting up this profile. Rehome will ask you some additional questions about your pet for their profile. Then, in Step 4 of creating the profile, select “Stray Cat Blues” as the referring shelter - this will place your cat on our website. Please use coupon code RCXHAQTL2U8AD8Z so that the Adopt a Pet listing fee required of pet owners will be just $1!
After creating your profile, bookmark the URL (you’ll use it later).
4. Market Your Pet
With your photo, bio and Rehome link ready, share your pet with your friends, relatives and co-workers. Post your pet on NextDoor, your neighborhood social media group and your social media accounts. And ask your friends and followers to share with their friends and followers. Ask veterinarians if you can post a rehoming flyer in their clinic.
Spread the word, and don’t be shy! You never know who may be looking to adopt their new pet. Be patient and don’t lose hope. The right family is out there!
5. Ask a Rescue Group for Help
We understand that sometimes despite best efforts it is necessary to surrender your cat. In this case, we feel the best solution is for Stray Cat Blues Rescue to take the cat and find them a new, loving home.
Based on urgency and foster home space availability, Stray Cat Blues does take in cats surrendered by their owners. Please understand that because we have very limited resources, it's necessary for us to prioritize the cats we take into rescue. Our top priority is to rescue stray and abandoned cats and kittens (i.e. the ones that come in to our Help Requests). Next we take in shelter cats in danger of being euthanized followed by cats returned that were adopted from Stray Cat Blues and lastly owner surrenders will be considered. Please be patient with us and we will do our best to work with you to ensure the safety and well-being of your cat.
